Web Site Lets People Offer Microloans to Borrowers Worldwide
Kiva.org, a nonprofit microlending Web site, has enabled people to make small loans that can make a big difference to other individuals. Kiva is “all about connecting people” and “connecting lenders with microbusinesses online,” says Matt Flannery, the chief executive officer and one of the co-founders of the Web site. (complete text)
Businesses Show Growing Interest in Social Responsibility
Many companies go beyond the "bottom line" in making profits and work to improve society at large, a practice known as corporate social responsibility (CSR). As an example, Chevron Corporation sponsors an Arrive Alive program in many developing countries. Created in 2004, Arrive Alive partners with local governments, nongovernmental organizations and private sector companies to define road safety issues in a specific country and develop an action plan to address the issue of fatal vehicular accidents in such countries as South Africa, Uganda and Nigeria.
