What “checks and balances” does a free press provide, and why are these checks and balances important in a democracy?

Should different standards apply to government-owned and privately-owned new services? Why or why not?

Should journalists’ obligation to report the truth ever be influenced by the interests of a country’s citizens or its governments?

What do you think are the principal obstacles or threats to freedom of the press/media in your country? What do you think can or should be done to address the threats, or remove the obstacles?

Does a free press have an obligation to act responsibly? How can professional associations, ombudsmen and the general public help keep the media in check?
