Finance Officials Challenged by Turbulent Economic Conditions

The finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of Seven (G7) countries must address a growing credit crisis and other challenges that experts say could cause a downturn in the global economy. Those officials are scheduled to meet in Washington on the eve of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank sessions October 19-20. The G7 comprises Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.   (complete text)


G8 Leaders Pledge Assistance for Africa, Emerging Economies

Leaders of the Group of Eight nations pledge to assist Africa and other countries, and endorse President Bush’s initiative for a major global climate agreement by the end of 2008. From the U.S. viewpoint, the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, was “very positive,” White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino tells reporters. The summit included an important compromise agreement on global climate change and “significant commitments to Africa,” Perino says.   (complete text)


G8 Countries Agree on Process To Address Global Warming

The leaders of the major industrial countries are narrowing their differences on climate change policy and moving toward a plan that eventually will set targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. government’s top environmental adviser. “I think you're going to see a strong commitment of these leaders to a process for establishing a long-term goal, long-term vision for substantial reductions in greenhouse gases,” James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, tells reporters on the first day of the June 6-8 Group of Eight leaders meeting in Germany.   (complete text)
