Bush Says Turkey, U.S. To Expand Effort on Kurdish Terror Group

President Bush pledges to increase U.S. intelligence-sharing and security cooperation with Turkey to confront terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), following a recent deadly series of PKK cross-border attacks from northern Iraq. "The PKK is a terrorist organization. They're an enemy of Turkey, they're an enemy of Iraq and they're an enemy of the United States," Bush tells reporters following a meeting in Washington with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Criminal Law Reforms in Eurasia Get Boost from U.S. Experts

The American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative, which began reaching countries throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the late 1980s and early 1990s, promotes development of advocacy and legal practice skills; adoption of ethical standards for judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys; and establishment of merit-based, transparent entry into legal professions. Small Arms Destruction Efforts Reverberate Around the World

Left unattended, even small stockpiles of surplus and obsolete AK-47 assault rifles, grenade launchers and shoulder-fired missiles could be stolen and used to fuel regional conflicts. Over the years, U.S. assistance has helped destroy more than a million such weapons in places like El Salvador, Suriname, Burundi, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cambodia and weapons destruction programs are under way in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
