Busy ports cluster around the nation’s leading coal exporter, Hampton Roads—Norfolk is home base for the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet, and shipbuilding thrives at Newport News. In northern Virginia the booming Washington metropolitan area invades rolling countryside.
