Countering Misinformation

About Us


The "Identifying Misinformation" web collection is written by the U.S. Department of State's counter-misinformation officer, who has 13 years of experience in this area. He has extensive experience in researching deliberate disinformation spread by countries such the Soviet Union and Saddam Hussein's Iraq, as well as urban legends and conspiracy theories.

The counter-misinformation officer has authored several reports in this area, including:

•  The Child Organ Trafficking Rumor: A Modern "Urban Legend," a 1994 report to the United Nations

•  Soviet Active Measures in the "Post-Cold War" Era, a 1992 report to the U.S. Congress, which is available online.

•  Soviet Active Measures in the Era of Glasnost, a 1988 report to the U.S. Congress.
