Women’s representation in politics continues to grow in the United States, with some of the most important political offices currently occupied or sought after by women. For example, Hillary Rodham Clinton is a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination and Nancy Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives following last year’s elections. And yet women in the United States only hold 16 percent of the 535 congressional seats, compose 25 percent of the representatives in state legislatures, and hold an all-time high of just nine gubernatorial offices.

Ladda Tammy Duckworth, director of the Illinois Veterans' Affairs Department and former Democratic congressional candidate, will speak on the necessity of greater female participation in the political process. She will also be prepared to discuss her role as a champion of veterans, and her own experience as a veteran who lost both of her legs in the war in Iraq. Please join us on June 14 for a webchat that will explore a host of hot-button issues ranging from women’s role in politics to how the United States takes care of its veterans.

Guest Biography:

Ladda Tammy Duckworth has been the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs since November 21, 2006, and is currently also a major with the Illinois National Guard. Duckworth has served as commander of a Blackhawk Helicopter Company, and as a battle captain and assistant operations officer, she helped with planning, assigning and tracking combat missions for a 500-soldier aviation taskforce in Iraq. She also flew more than 200 combat hours as a Blackhawk pilot. It was during a mission in November 2004 that a rocket-propelled grenade struck the cockpit of her helicopter and exploded; Duckworth suffered grave injuries, and lost both her legs.

Duckworth has received the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medical and the National Defense Service Medal, along with other decorations, citations and badges. Since coming home from Iraq, Duckworth has regularly spoken to veterans’ groups, testified before Congress on veterans' medical care issues, and run for a seat in Congress. She is also an author with textbook chapters and articles published on the effects of environmental radon and lung cancer.

Duckworth, who speaks four languages, has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Hawaii; a master's degree from the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs; and is working on a doctorate degree in political science from Northern Illinois University. Duckworth was born in Thailand and grew up in several countries in Southeast Asia. Her father fought as a U.S. Marine in World War II and the Vietnam War, and her mother was a native of Thailand.
