The current wave of suicide terrorism associated with al-Qaida defies easy explanation. As a result, many myths color the conventional wisdom about this form of terrorism. Marc Sageman will address these myths in a USINFO webchat on August 30. Sageman has conducted extensive research using material from more than 400 terrorists affiliated with al-Qaida to test conventional wisdom associated with the causes of terrorism. His research has been published as "Understanding Terror Networks" (University of Pennsylvania Press 2004) and he has presented his findings in testimony before the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9/11 Commission). He currently consults on terrorism with various U.S. government agencies.
Guest Biography: Marc Sageman is an independent researcher on terrorism and is the founder and principal of Sageman Consulting LLC in Rockville, Maryland. He is a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia and a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. Sageman graduated from Harvard University in 1973, and holds master's and doctorate degrees in political sociology from New York University.
