Storytelling is an effective technique to capture the imaginations of young minds and improve students' language skills. Storytelling also can appeal to different senses and learning styles, and can be a wonderful way to connect cultures. Join Joan Kang Shin for a webchat exploring the use of storytelling to teach Young Learners of English (YLs). Shin will share and discuss storytelling techniques and activities for YLs and encourage webchat participants to explore the use of stories to integrate all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), promote critical thinking, teach vocabulary and grammar, and most of all, make English-language learning come alive for YLs.

Guest Biography: Joan Kang Shin is a full-time lecturer in the education department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She is also the coordinator of online and off-campus master’s and certificate programs for English as a Second Language (ESL)/Bilingual Education, and a doctoral candidate in UMBC's Language, Literacy and Culture Program. An experienced ESL/English as a Foreign Language teacher and teacher trainer, Shin has worked for the U.S. Department of State’s Office of English Language Programs conducting workshops and developing an online course on Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). She recently has published two articles in the English Teaching Forum related to TEYL, “Ten Helpful Ideas for Teaching English to Young Learners” (Vol. 44, No. 2) and “Developing Dynamic Units for EFL” (Vol. 45, No. 2).
