Throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, programs supported by U.S. nonprofits, corporations and government are finding innovative ways to engage, educate and empower the citizens they serve.
USINFO talks to program participants in El Salvador, and to those touched by the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship on a tour that includes stops in 12 Latin American countries. Providing free medical care at each port, it will have treated 85,000 patients and performed 1,500 surgeries by the end of its voyage.
Its medical crew comprises more than 500 military and civilian doctors, nurses and health care professionals who provide basic medical care, dental and vision services, public health training, veterinary services and, perhaps most importantly, hope.
